Chapter 73
The phone rang.
Simmy debated... "Hello," she answered with a internal resolve and a low huskiness of implacable persuasion.
"Simmy, it's Jayne. Oh, I'm just so upset. Lucy and Ethel are being so mean and ganging up together again. One of them even quoted some Scripture to me, as a defensive weapon, I think."
"Oh dear, they'll stoop to anything, these girls. You're having a Sophie Germain kind of day, aren't you?"
"Who? What?" The tears stopped as Jayne was waylaid by this strange response.
"Germain, Sophie- a woman with brotherly wisdom and a mathematical mind." Simmy explained. "Some say that she really should have her name on the Eiffel Tower for her work on the 'theory of elasticity' but, alas, it is not there."
Simmy sighed deeply.
Jayne blew her lips in frustration. "What does this have to do with..."
"Everything!" Simmy snapped. "You have an important job. Backbiting and 'princess sniping' will only undermine the value of the movie. J.P. hired you Jayne, because he knows you can do a P.R. job that will draw people back to the work at hand. All that Hollywood sensationalism is just positioning crap. Do not fall for their 'smoke and mirrors' tactics. They're just bullying you. J.P. has your back."
"It's so hard to deal with them." Jayne's voice cut with pain.
"Do you remember the 'Girls Bullying' scene from June? What did you learn from the 'No More Christian Nice Girl' book?"
"Oh,..." Jayne was thinking back to June.
Simmy gave her a nudge, "Women bully other women and show contempt and disrespect by???"
Jayne jumped in with the answer, "...cutting me out of the loop; not inviting me to things..."
"Right, but if someone confronts them on their behaviour, they just gang up together. That tells you, they're cowards. Bullies always are, Jayne."
"It's hard to work behind the scenes, Simmy," Jayne spoke a frank truth.
"'Studying in secrecy, concealing her identity, Germain impressed some of the most brilliant minds of her time.' That's a quote from Suite101... The article is titled, 'She laid the foundation for the Construction of Skyscrapers, by Penny White.'"
"So, is that a 'No More LeBlanc, by Blanc?'" Jayne quipped.
"That's the spirit! It's hard enough to accept the 'old boys' club' mentality but an 'old girls' club?' Don't buy into that. Maybe 'Sophie Germain' isn't inscribed on the phallic power tower but she was smart enough to get her name on a school."
"Really? There's a school with her name on it?"
"Yes, it's a 'Reform High School.' Ironic, no?"
